Trapper Jock Braithwaite

We would like to celebrate the life of volunteer trapper Jock Braithwaite and his contribution to the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.

We lost a strong supporter with the recent death of Jock Braithwaite.

Jock trained at the Mining School at Otago University and spent a lot of his early years prospecting for uranium and other minerals in the Nelson area. This involved strenuous field work in steep bush country which led to his fitness and love of the bush and mountains. He later worked in gold mining and became a world recognised expert.

Jock tramped most areas of Nelson and many beyond including climbing Mt Cook/Aoraki and Kilimanjaro.

On retirement the Sanctuary provided a great environment for his bush and practical skills which were put to good use building, maintaining, improving and checking traps. Jock was never still and when Leukemia kept him at home he was still cleaning and varnishing Victor traps.

He will be sorely missed.
