We welcome and invite all interested people to become part of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary project.  You can become a member of the Trust, participate as a volunteer, assist us as a sponsor, or simply come and visit. Your involvement will make a direct difference to the preservation of New Zealand’s unique natural heritage.

The Brook Sanctuary

Make a donation or join us as a sponsoring partner

Currently membership fees and donations are the main ways that we fund the day-to-day running of the Sanctuary, so you can be sure that anything you give will have a direct benefiit.

2006 saw the project move from a great idea to a reality on the ground with the entrance building, work within the forest and $500,000 raised. In 2008 we are looking for individual and corporate sponsors to join the projects as partners. Please contact us if you would be interested in finding out more. We can offer an opportunity to be associated with what will become one of the region’s top visitor attractions, with many ways for you or your staff to become actively involved.

Become a volunteer

We currently need:

  • volunteers to be part of our fundraising team
  • trapping and tracking volunteers
  • data entry volunteers to help colate our trapping data
  • GPS operators to help plot further operational tracks
  • Weed cutters to control invasive species

There will be opportunities to be involved in many additional ways as the Sanctuary develops.

Currently there is a lovely walk (3/4hr return) alongside the stream and 19th Century waterworks. This takes you through diverse secondary forest full of ferns and fruiting trees and we expect to see bird numbers increase here as we are carrying out some initial predator trapping. The Sanctuary’s award winning entrance building is open daily 10am - 4pm through the summer, with displays providing further information on the project. Work has begun on a Loop track with wheel chair access to the Sanctuary.

You can join the Sanctuary as a member. This costs $30 a year for a family / couple or $25 a year for an individual. As a member you will receive quarterly newsletters updating you on project progress and other news and events.
